Darning Egg with Handle | Handmade from Recycled Hardwood (Oak, Beech or Teak) | Hand-Turned

£20.00

A hand-turned recycled hardwood darning egg with handle — smooth, durable and ideal for sock darning, knitwear repair and visible mending.

Availability: 1 in stock

This handmade darning egg with a handle is crafted from locally sourced Nottinghamshire hardwoods, including oak, beech and teak. Each egg is individually hand-turned on a lathe, giving it a completely unique grain pattern, colour tone and natural markings. No two are ever alike — each one is a one-of-a-kind mending tool created by a skilled local woodturner.

Designed for both traditional darning and modern visible mending, this wooden egg provides a smooth, sturdy curved surface that makes repairing holes in socks, knitwear and woven fabrics much easier. The attached handle gives better grip and control, especially when working on awkward areas like toes, heels or small children’s garments.

The egg and handle are turned from one continuous piece of wood, not assembled. The handle includes a single groove detail near the base for secure hold during detailed handwork.

Please note: the mending wool shown in photos is not included.

Product Features

Hand-Turned from Recycled Hardwood

Each darning egg is shaped from reclaimed oak, beech or teak sourced within a few miles of the woodturner’s Nottinghamshire workshop. (Teak is reclaimed from a local timber yard; original provenance unknown.)

Natural Hemp Oil Finish

Finished with vegan, nut-allergy-friendly hemp oil that enhances the natural grain while keeping the surface smooth and comfortable to use.

Eco-Friendly Craftsmanship

Made entirely from recycled hardwoods and supplied in plastic-free packaging, this tool supports sustainable, low-waste crafting.

How to Use This Darning Egg

  • Ideal for socks, knitwear, woven fabrics and garment reinforcement

  • Perfect for visible mending and freestyle embroidery repairs

  • Handle allows stability when working inside narrow garment sections

  • Curved egg shape helps maintain fabric shape and tension

Important Notes

  • Each egg is handmade and unique in colour, grain and natural markings

  • Reclaimed wood may show subtle historic marks from its previous life (e.g. tiny filled holes or impressions) — these are features, not faults

  • This particular egg has been turned from two reclaimed pieces laminated before shaping, so a visible joint line is part of its character
